The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) has just released its latest Compliance Focus which highlights their compliance priorities and risk focus over the next 12 months.
The Commissioner of Inland Revenue Naomi Ferguson emphasises in her opening statement that Inland Revenue "wants to make it as simple, open and certain as possible for everyone to do the right thing". At the same time, Inland Revenue takes very seriously any attempts people make to deliberately avoid paying tax or claim payments they're not entitled to". The Commissioner underlines that Inland Revenue has "sophisticated systems to detect such activities" so they can take action.
The Commissioner's statement is in line with IRD's focus and investigating activities in the last few years.
In addition to encouraging taxpayers in general to get the basics right, key focus areas for 2014/2015 include:
Aggressive tax planning
Central and local government
Life insurance providers
Fraud and identity theft
People with high wealth or high income
The property sector
Under-reporting of income and operating outside the system.
This year, the Inland Revenue Department has published the Compliance Focus in a PDF format, which you can easily download-see Compliance Focus
Please contact us if you have any concerns or would like to discuss the Compliance Focus and what it means for you personally or for your business.
